Universal Scrapbook Sneak Peek: Joei Lau's Double Happiness
|
Sunday 30th Aug 2009 |
Thanks to artist Lie Fhung for this sneak peek at one of the submissions to her Universal Scrapbook, the public participation part of her Dream Archives art installation, sponsored by Kolo. Dream Archives and the Universal Scrapbook will exhibit internationally, beginning in November at SiGiarts Gallery in Jakarta. This artwork, above, is a digital scrapbooking piece by artist Joei Lau, an art gallery and creative workspace owner in Tokyo, who originally hails from Hong Kong. She interpreted the Universal Scrapbook theme, "Dream," to express her greatest wish... for her family and two countries: I created this digital scrapbooking piece in Photoshop. I combined a few photos I took from my house. The Kanji Double Happiness is a framed work I received from my best Hong Kong friend years ago when I said goodbye to HK and moved to Tokyo with my Japanese husband. Handwritings and a journal page caption my loves of HK family and Hong Kong. After spending 14 years in Tokyo, the longer I am here, the deeper I love my home country. I added the word LOVE (digital and handwriting) to express my "double" feelings of these two countries. Visit Joei Lau's blog (in Japanese) here and the RBR Gallery sites here in Japanese and here in English. Note: Submissions to the Universal Scrapbook of "dream signifiers" do not have to be as finished as this example. For more information about participating in the Universal Scrapbook, go here. The deadline has been extended to Sept. 30, 2009 for a few stragglers who have not yet completed their submissions, so you still have time to participate! If you have questions, feel free to post a comment here.) |

What's In Your Kolo Window?
|
Friday 28th Aug 2009 |
Show us your Kolo cover windows! We'll show the best entries here on Koloist.com, Kolo Facebook and Flickr (both Ugo the Koloist's Flickr page and the Kolo Group page on Flickr). Of all entries received by Sept 30, 2009, midnight (U.S. eastern time), five will be selected to receive prizes of Kolo archival albums, boxes and accessories. Submissions will be judged by professional photographers and designers. Submit as many photos of your Kolo windows as you like. The opinions of Koloist.com visitors (that's you) will be taken into account, so feel free to post comments about your faves. (Anyone can post comments on Koloist - there's no need to register, just click on "comment" - top left.) To submit your Kolo window photo(s), send as an email attachment to kolowindows@kolo-usa.com . Write "Kolo Cover Window" in the subject line. For creative inspiration, here are four examples of some great Kolo windows we've seen. Clockwise starting top left: 1. Steve Light is a New York City artist, children's book author, toy maker and teacher. This is the window of a Kolo Luxury Cortina in platinum (red endleaves) that he used to create a book "City Dragons," filled with his original art. (See more of this project here and here.) 2. Kelli Taylor is a Chicago photographer. She filled these chartreuse Kolo Noci albums with some of her favorite recipes and created the photos with text in the cover windows in Photoshop. For more on this project go here. 3. Jen Gotch is a California photographer and Polanoid with a fun Polaroid blogspot. We love her bashful self-portrait, cropped small so that it "floats" in the cover window of her ivory Kolo Newbury. For more on this project go here. 4. Patrick Ng of Hong Kong is a creative opinion leader and fan of stationery/photography products, and editor of the popular blog Scription, Thoughts on Stationery and Beyond. He cut tiny thumbnail photos of his boy from a photo developer's index card, and created this diminutive photo collage in a mango Kolo Cortina window. For more on this project, go here. -Ugo |

Motorman Travels Light With a Kolo Essex Book
|
Sunday 23rd Aug 2009 |
Our friend Motorman got a Kolo Essex Travel Book as a birthday gift. He was planning a long summer road trip on his Honda Shadow from Texas to Michigan. He needed to travel light, so he turned the photo-sleeve booklet into a map holder and took the Kolo Essex on the road. He sent in these shots by Mackinac Bridge: That little notebook was really helpful. I got all my maps easy to reach in my pocket, organized all my receipts, and charted all my stops so I didn't have to worry about where the next gas stop was every hundred miles or so. |
